Pet Loss Support
Grief is grief. If you are mourning the loss of a beloved pet due to death or other means we understand how difficult the emotions can be to handle. In many ways, our hearts don't know the difference between the love for an animal and the love for a human. Because of the unique unconditional love experienced in the human-animal bond, we may find ourselves surprised at the overwhelming intensity of our feelings of grief.
Our pets are members of our families thus, distinct roles and attachments are created no differently than with human family members. When our pets are gone, the void left in our hearts and home is real and it takes time to adjust on many levels. It is important, however painful, to allow yourself to experience the full range of emotions that accompany the loss of your dear pet for as long as it takes to work through your loss. Pet Loss Support is a safe and caring place for you to do this much needed grief work.
The nature of the bond we form with our pets differs per person, but for many, the power of that bond is realized when they mourn the loss of their beloved animal companion. Our feelings of grief can be further intensified by the circumstances surrounding the loss of our pet as well as the insensitivity of well-meaning others who may not understand that bond. The pet loss experience is further complicated as the bereft pet owner experiences isolation, self-doubt and confusion about their emotional reaction.
Pet Loss counseling seeks to validate and normalize the unique significance and profound meaning our pets bring to our lives. Facilitated by Sue Mocniak BSW, MSW, LSW, our support group is a safe place for likeminded individuals to be there for one another through sharing, caring, discussing the circumstances of our loss, and honoring your beloved pet through remembrance and storytelling. Group support is unique because there is nothing so comforting as realizing you are not alone in your loss. Although circumstances may vary, many people are comforted to find that others feel the same way you do. Allow yourself to choose individual support when you feel the need for a more private place to work through complex emotional fallout and circumstances brought on by the loss of your pet which is not an uncommon phenomenon.
