Anger Management
Even a relationship that seems to have everything going for it can quickly be undone by just one partner who has difficulty controlling his or her expressions of anger. Often complicating the relationship picture is anger that may have roots in a prior romance, an unresolved relationship from childhood or a host of other sources that are not easy to pinpoint or resolve. Frequently, a couple “makes up” in the wake of a bad incident, but because the real root of the problem has not been exposed or addressed, it is only a matter of time until the next incident occurs.
The list below contains some signs that indicate a professional assessment and recommendation are appropriate. If you identify some of the following items it may be time to reach out for help:
- You are baffled by how well you can get along or how “in love” you feel but also are frustrated by a cycle of damaging expressions of anger
- You fear your partner’s reactions to your opinions and viewpoints
- You find yourself telling “white lies” or bold lies to avoid conflict
- You are seeing a pattern of shouting, cursing or demeaning and abusive language develop
- Your friends or family express concerns with regard for your safety
- You find yourself in a pattern of defending your or your partner's behaviors to family or friends who ask about it
- You have had an incident which involved a slap, shove, push or other physical threat
