Pastoral Care approaches the client holistically, from a theological/spiritual perspective. All aspects of their life are considered for care: spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, familial, relational, vocational, and denomination. From a theological perspective, a client is first a child of God, created in His image to be in a relationship with him. All care given is grounded in a biblical and Christian worldview and ultimately focused on helping the client deal with the issue(s) inhibiting their movement toward God and the abundant life he desires for each of us.
Pastoral Care is not simply telling people to pray and read their Bible more. It is walking alongside the client, affirming God’s love for them, and exploring with them how to experience God’s love in a way that helps them move toward healing and wholeness.
is more structured in its approach: formal diagnoses, documented treatment plans, and measurable outcomes. It deals (usually) with more severe symptoms and pathologies. It is regulated by strict licensure requirements and practical guidelines.
is usually more goal-oriented and strategic. Although there are overlaps with Pastoral Care, Coaching is often focused on helping a client achieve something they desire.
is usually more informal in its approach and explorational in its treatment. Often a person presents without a clear understanding of what is wrong, and the first step is to help them discover what that is. Unlike Clinical Counseling, there may not be a clear pathology to diagnose, and unlike Coaching there may be no clear goal to achieve. Ultimately, what sets Pastoral Counseling apart is that it always points the client to Jesus, who, through his Spirit, is an active partner in the client’s treatment.
