ADHD coaching is an evidence-based practice that offers clients the space to receive practical suggestions, constructive feedback, encouragement, and accountability to leverage their unique strengths. By addressing the core challenges of a neurodivergent brain (i.e. planning, time management, goal setting, organization, problem-solving, and relationship issues) an ADHD coach may be tremendously helpful.
While therapy often focuses on exploring past experiences and addressing emotional issues, ADHD coaching is more action-oriented. It emphasizes developing practical strategies, skills, and tools to manage ADHD symptoms and improve daily functioning.
An effective ADHD coach should have specialized training in ADHD coaching, a strong understanding of ADHD, and ideally, a certification from a reputable coaching organization. Many coaches also have backgrounds in psychology, counseling, or education.
During an ADHD coaching session, the coach and client typically discuss specific challenges the client is facing. They work together to set goals, develop strategies, and create action plans. Sessions may also include skill-building exercises and accountability check-ins.
Many ADHD coaches are licensed mental health professionals who can offer diagnostic services, treatment planning, and goal-oriented strategies. However, an ADHD coach without proper training cannot diagnose ADHD. If you’re unsure about an ADHD diagnosis or any other mental health condition, we recommend consulting with a licensed therapist.
